Barrier to the Orange

ONE SIMPLE IDEA

Barrier to the Orange
About the Skin; Peeling through the Barrier to the Orange

By Mark Isaac Thyss
Garden of Healing®

For most people, the skin is the barrier to the goodness that lies inside the orange. Dealing with that skin is the first step.

Who doesn't like oranges?

Oranges are the perfect food as medicine.

This favorite breakfast food is a potent source of vitamin C. They taste wonderful and there are so many good things that can be said about them.

A single sunny navel orange provides beta-cryptoxanthin, a carotenoid that may help prevent colon cancer. And the juice of the orange has been shown to elevate HDL cholesterol ("good") while lowering LDL ("bad") cholesterol.

When thinking about eating an orange, if you have trouble getting through that barrier, remember this ONE SIMPLE IDEA:

Just one serving of the fruit covers your daily requirement of vitamin C.

Heck, go ahead, eat two!

And don't forget to eat the white pith which is an easy way to increase your pectin intake.

You can't go wrong with oranges; they are a delicious, simple and easy snack, once you battle that barrier.

By far, the best way of enjoying this fruit is to put the entire organic orange through a powerful juicer to get the most of all the nutrients.

The Healing Garden

GARDENING

The Healing Garden

Source: The National Garden Bureau
http://www.ngb.org/index.cfm

In the best of times flowers help us celebrate the joyous occasions in our lives—the birth of a child, a wedding, career or personal success. In more difficult times plants give us hope and inspiration to meet the challenges of life.

The role of the plants and gardens in healing is ancient. As early as 3000 B.C. the Chinese were using medicinal herbs. The Greeks built a temple for Aesclepius, their god of healing, set among mineral springs, bathing pools, and healing gardens. Green was a sacred color in ancient Egypt and represented the hope of spring that brought new vegetation and life.

In colonial America, the Quakers felt a deep attachment to nature and believed gardens were a place of creativity for the mind and body. Growing plants was a way to relax and restore the soul. One of the first programs to use plants in a therapeutic setting was established in 1879 at Philadelphia’s Friends Hospital after a physician noticed that psychiatric patients working in the hospital’s fields and flower gardens were calmer and that the gardens had a “curative” effect on them.

In more recent times, advances in technology and new drugs have been the focus of treatment at medical institutions. However, within the past few decades, the medical community around the world is rediscovering the healing power of gardens. Many hospitals and health care facilities are incorporating green spaces, flowerbeds and views of gardens into their surroundings and horticultural therapy programs are often an important part of a patient’s course of treatment.

Those Five Servings of Fruits and Vegetables

ONE SIMPLE IDEA

Those Five Servings of Fruits and Vegetables

By Mark Isaac Thyss
Garden of Healing®

Nutritional experts recommend that you eat a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. But, how many times have you hear or read this?

In your lifetime, countless times, to be sure!

Here’s what to do to take action.

Use your fist.

Let’s face it, most nutritional information is boring and it’s hard to remember all those details.

Here’s a way to make things easy - one simple idea is all you need.

Be like Einstein.

It has been said that Albert Einstein did not bother to remember anthing he could not find in a book or elsewhere. Apparently, mundane detail was not his thing. Similarly, in this instance, use the image of your fist to remember this important broad nutritional recommendation we all hear, but might not be ready or willing to carry out.

Wait, that’s two simple ideas; it’s getting complicated already: be like Einstein and use your fist.

Which one is it?

Try to remember these guidelines (this is where things get complicated):

Consider eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

What is a serving?

A half cup of cooked or one cup of raw vegetables.
A medium sized piece of fruit, like an apple or an orange.
A half cup of canned or frozen fruit.
A quarter cup of dried fruit, like raisins.
A three quarter cup of juice, or six ounces.
Add fruits and vegetables to every meal.
Eat a cantaloupe for breakfast.

Don’t forget to eat one veggie for lunch and two for dinner. If you can’t take your vegetables plain, consume them as soups.

If you have a can of soup, toss in one half cup of peas.

Add vegetables to your spaghetti sauce.

Sorry, that slice of blueberry pie does not count…

Enough! Here’s our ONE SIMPLE IDEA.

Use your fist and eat five times that of any fruit or vegetable a day. Half cup, one cup, three quarters cup, frozen, cooked or canned - forget it.

If you strive to eat five fist-fuls of anything colorful or green everyday, you’ll be doing better than the 70% of Americans who survive on coffee, pastries, processed foods and TV dinners.

Use your fist and eat five times that amount of fuits and vegetables per day and you’ll be just fine. This is your one simple idea; Einstein would certainly approve.
